Birthlight: Unique Special Baby & Toddler Swim Course

So many swim teachers say that they have the ‘best job in the world’. Our Birthlight Special Baby and Toddler Swimming Course can further deepen your teaching skills and make your chosen career all the more rewarding.  Working with children with disabilities will challenge and enliven your aquatic practice as it extends and strengthens your teaching, plus benefitting your standard classes as well.

Three participants did just that last month by taking part in the course at Peterborough with tutors Sally Lomas and Carol Anne Procter. Through classroom sessions and pool work, we looked at the importance of the built environment to children challenged with both neurological and physical conditions such as sound, lighting and access together with adapted holds and handling techniques in the water.

In the pool, we were joined by Mia, a four year old with Autism and Libby, a deaf and blind child of 11 months and their mothers where we explored some of the specialised approaches and techniques appropriate for children with disabilities.

Provision of aquatic therapy and specialised swimming for children with disabilities is very limited both in the UK and overseas. This course offers the opportunity to work within this area of work, making your choice of career not just ‘the best in the world’ for yourself but also to the lives of the children and their families that your work will touch. It also looks at ways of effectively marketing an aquatic therapy business using skills gained from the Course, helping to expand your client base and bring additional enrolments.

With the combination of Sally Lomas' extensive background supporting women and their families through the journey of pregnancy, birth and parenting on both land and in water and Carol Anne’s years of experience in taking children with profound and complex disabilities in the water, the course and the subsequent coursework will bring you new approaches, skills and techniques.

Our next Special Baby & Toddler course is planned for Spring 2019 – register your interest with the Birthlight Office to reserve your place.
