What does it mean to be a member of Birthlight?

At Birthlight, we believe in community support. That is how Birthlight started, in the middle of a tiny indigenous community where pregnant women and babies were looked after and nurtured by the entire community. Touch, nurture, love, attention were the core qualities Françoise observed during her time doing fieldwork for the University of Cambridge. She brought that idea back to the UK and started some classes with her own children and friends. This is the core of any Birthlight course - community, support, nurturing.

Nowadays it can be difficult to find a place where you can go and feel comfortable - to be there and just be yourself. As a mom it can be even more difficult. In the era of technology, when everyone spends most of their time in front of computers, tablets or smartphone screens, a time where we don’t have time for anything and everything seems to have a price tag on it, we lost that sense of community. We seem to be strangers to everyone, we can’t count on our community to help us, to nurture us, to support us. But then, I raise the question: What does it mean to be part of a community such as the Birthlight community? What does it really mean to be a Birthlight member?

It can be quite difficult to perceive this community when we are the only member in our region, or even in our country. It can also be difficult when there are other dozens of Birthlight teachers in our tiny region, all struggling to fill our classes.

Well, for me, being part of this big community means a lot. It means that just like in those tiny villages, the world can be a big community full of people who help and support each other. In the same way that technology can estrange us, it can unite this big community where every member care for each other. Through Youtube I marvel at videos of teacher training courses that are happening in Russia or Germany. I exchange messages with several people on the Birthlight Baby Yoga Facebook group - giving and taking advice and teaching ideas. I use the training website to get pictures for the posts I am writing on my Facebook page. I read interesting articles and use them to promote my Birthlight classes. I find interesting questions and answers in the Birthlight forum, that enlighten and enrich my experience as a Birthlight teacher. I exchange emails with other teachers, the ones I met in the Birthlight conferences, I have been in touch with people from the far east China - and when I say far, I mean it. As I am currently living in Brazil every Birthlight member seems to be so far away from me. Yet, I feel included. I follow Birthlight Austria on Instagram, I follow Kiki’s baby swimming page in Greece. I know there are many of you out there, in every single corner of this big yet tiny world.

I promote my classes on the Birthlight website because I know that if someone in Brazil  hears about Birthlight they will be able to find me using the ‘find a teacher’ search tool. I also know that by being listed there, people will be certain that I represent this big community - I am really part of it. Being a Birthlight member gives me the confidence that I took my training with the best tutors, the best methodology, I am part of a big community that its main goal is to make the world a better place. I hope you all feel the same way and I hope we can work together despite our distance. I hope we can make the difference in our little communities, bringing more happiness to the families that surround us. I hope we can make those spirals of joy bigger and bigger!

With love,
Renata Konitz
