Nurturing baby massage

This three-day intensive short course will give you a qualification in birthlight baby massage. You will also learn a wide range of practices for supporting new mothers and enhancing their interaction with babies aged 0-4 months.

Included are beautiful flowing birthlight baby massage sequences, mini baby yoga moves and early postnatal recovery for new mothers. We look at how to include fathers and other family members and how to create a warm and nurturing atmosphere where relaxed bonding and enjoyment can naturally occur. The course integrates theory with practice and where possible we invite visiting babies to our practical sessions.

This short course has been designed by birthlight tutor and ex midwife and massage therapist Liz Doherty with Françoise Freedman and Sally Lomas.

Who is this course for?

The course is open to:

  • Health professionals (nursery nurses, health visitors)
  • Children centre’s staff  (such as Sure Start Staff)
  • Qualified Birthlight teachers
  • Mothers, through the Mother’s route to Training, conditional to the reading of the anatomy and physiology of infants before attending the course.

Students are required to bring a weighted, life-size demonstration doll to the course. They are an essential for teaching as part of teaching practice and once qualified. They can be purchased from our online shop just click on 'dolls' in the item menu.

Course outline

This pioneering course offers integrated parentcraft skills in a holistic perspective that complements fragmented maternity and pediatric care.

  • For babies, infant massage, relaxed holds and baby rhythms inspired from traditional cultures promote wellbeing and bonding in simple and enjoyable interactive forms
  • For mothers, postnatal recovery includes techniques to access instant relaxation and deep rest; pelvic floor toning; spinal re-alignment; comfortable holds and pick up tips. For fathers, relaxed holds and body-based practices facilitate handling newborns and bonding.

This practical training includes full baby massage, ‘positive touch’ strokes specially adapted for newborns; relaxed holds and gentle movements for new babies. We also integrate simple Postnatal yoga for Mum's recovery. The aim is for teachers to gain the ability to make these practices easy to learn and use for inexperienced mothers and also fathers. Hands-on experience is central to this training. Relevant underpinning knowledge is included but course participants are encouraged to gain further theoretical understanding from reading selected books and articles. Training is imparted with the use of dolls. Parent-newborn pairs are invited to join guest sessions for teaching practice whenever possible.

How is this course assessed?

This course is assessed by means of a practical with a doll. Qualification is conditional to satisfactory completion of coursework consisting of case-studies and a worksheet.

On successful completion of coursework, candidates gain a Certificate of Training in Nurturing Baby Massage that qualifies them to teach postnatal recovery, baby massage and nurturing practices to mother/baby pairs or small groups.

"The baby nurture Massage training with Bryony was absolutely brilliant! Bryony is so calm and reassuring throughout, so even though you are learning a lot, the pace and balance of learning, practising, listening and sharing feels great! At the end of each day I felt like I had learnt so much and had the chance to really be immersed in it and feel confident with that learning. The course content and materials are wonderful and I have come away so excited to start and confident to move forwards with this! I absolutely loved this training and can not wait to book onto the next course with Birthlight. Bryony and our Lovely group, thank you so much!" Jo, Yoga teacher and SENCO

"I'm absolutely loving teaching baby massage. My classes are busy and all the women and babies love the classes. The room usually feels awash with oxytocin. I'm also loving massaging my children too. Both my 3 and 12 year old  love having a massage now and it is becoming such a useful parenting tool when they are feeling vulnerable and like they need to connect but aren't sure how to with words. Particularly with my 12 year old. She always talks to me about her life when I massage her and it's brought us closer together again, like when she was little.  Your course has brought much light into my light, so my deep thanks for that."
