Aqua Yoga foundation course

In the 45 Hour Birthlight Aqua Yoga Foundation teacher training course you will learn how to teach well tested adaptations of yoga in water, presented in a way that is applicable to all regardless of age, body shape, fitness level and previous experience with yoga or swimming. In this teacher training we take aquatic exercise a few steps further! The focus shifts into teaching integrated breath, movement and relaxed stretching. These are the essences of yoga and the known pathway to improved wellbeing and enjoyment of life for the less active in our society. Through the practice of Aqua Yoga, we can make the world a better place with enhanced enjoyment of free movement and increased self-confidence

Who is the course for?

The course is open to applicants with an interest in yoga who are:

  • Swimming, aquacise, aquarobics and aquafitness teachers
  • Yoga teachers who enjoy being in water
  • Health professionals using water skills (including Watsu practitioners)

If you already hold a Birthlight Aquanatal Yoga teaching qualification only Days 2-3 of the Aqua Yoga Foundation are required (you will still need to complete the 12 hours online pre-reading and 12 hours mentored case-studies)

Applicants should be able to swim 25 metres comfortably without the use of swimming aids, be confident in submerging themselves. Students must participate in the pool for all water sessions. A CPR qualification is also highly recommended. Life Saving skills are required for those planning to work in pools without a lifeguard on poolside.

Course outline

(45 hours:  21 contact hours over 3 days with 6 pool sessions, 12 hours online pre-reading, 12 hours mentored case-studies)

Take your aquatic practice to a whole new range of potential clients for group or individual work, for women throughout the lifecycle, including mid-life challenges, for men and women over 50 and those with impaired mobility, pain and chronic conditions at all ages.

This blended course packs in an exceptional richness of teaching experience in both yoga and swimming, research and development and training design. Course participants will:

  • Learn about adapting Yoga to Water in moves to the wall, free-standing moves with support props, floating moves, glides, aquatic walks and relaxation both on the back and on the front (illustrated with specific teaching points)
  • Learn about the main principles of yoga and how they can be enhanced using the properties of water
  • Yoga A&P applicable specifically to teaching Aqua Yoga
  • Teach Aqua Yoga sequences integrating fast active, slow active, relaxing and deeply relaxing practices
  • Teach Aqua Yoga to seniors and to adults with a low range of mobility
  • Teach Aqua Yoga elements for improving body balance and the enjoyment of swimming for all
  • Teach transformative mindfulness in water for more positive attitudes to life
  • Create enjoyable, fun classes including some interactive and group practices

How is this course assessed?

This course is tutor assessed with a practical and a theory assessment during the course. Coursework consists of one case study (minimum of 4 sessions), one class observation and one mentor feedback. It should be submitted within six months following the course.

What qualification is gained on this course?

On successful completion of their coursework, course participants receive the qualification of Certified Aqua Yoga Foundation teacher.

Course attendance requirement

Students must attend the courses in full in order to get the qualification. If a student misses more than 2 hours of the course, then the certification cannot be granted, and arrangements will need to be discussed and agreed in order to complete.

You will receive: pre-reading materials to be reviewed on the course (12 hours of reading). After the course: model class plans, case-study packs, course facebook group and plan for mentored follow up by Skype, feedback on case-studies.
