STA Level 3 Diploma in Aquatic Teaching - Baby and Pre-School

The STA Level 3 Diploma in Aquatic Teaching – Baby and Pre-School expands and develops a baby and pre-school swimming teacher’s current technical knowledge and provides them with the latest academic research and theories, which they can then integrate into their swimming lessons.

The Diploma covers specific knowledge on child development theories and communication and how these core elements can be incorporated into practical teaching. Baby and pre-school swimming teachers will be reflecting upon their practice and their professional development.

The qualification has been developed in partnership with Birthlight.

Credit Value: 42


  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Hold current membership of STA
  • Hold the Baby and Pre-School Award or acceptable equivalent if the online up-skill and STA Baby and Pre-School Award portfolio are completed
  • Hold a baby and pre-school teaching qualification for at least 6 months, and have 50 practical baby and pre-school teaching hours
  • Birthlight baby swimming teachers can join the course. They will need to complete the portfolio as the BPS award units are within the diploma. This consists of two worksheets but no need to complete the online up-skill.

Qualification certificates will not be issued until all pre-requisites have been supplied. If requested pre-requisites are not supplied within 12 months of the course end date, the qualification will expire.

Validity of Award

This qualification does not expire.To remain as an STA-approved swimming teacher, and to receive the benefit of STA public liability insurance, holders of this qualification are required to:

  • Remain in membership of STA
  • Keep their knowledge and skills up-to-date with regular CPDs
  • Keep their pre-requisite lifesaving qualification in-date
  • Regularly update their DBS check

Length of Course

Total Qualification Time: 370 Hours

  • 58 guided learning hours (including Baby and Pre-School Award units)
  • 312 directed assessment and learning hours

  • Submersions within Baby and Pre-School Swimming Lessons

  • Learning and Play within Swimming Lessons
  • Sensory Awareness within Swimming Lessons
  • Babies and Pre-Schoolers with Additional Needs
  • Reflecting upon Own Skills and Practice

Post Course Work

Candidates have 9 months from the course end date to complete:

  • 4 case studies
  • 6 lesson plans
  • 6 lesson evaluation forms which correspond to the lesson plans

Assessment Criteria

The qualification is assessed as set out below:

  • Continual assessment by the tutor
  • Complete a portfolio and worksheet questions to the satisfaction of the course tutor or assessor
  • Complete post-course work, case studies, lesson plans, lesson evaluation and reflective journal to the satisfaction of the assessor
